"Why did you get involved in your profession?"

I became involved in my profession serendipitously. I started undergraduate school as an English major before realizing that the career opportunities were limited and that I did not want to teach high school English. I had completed few science courses before college, when I realized I had an interest in research. With a great deal of catching up, I received an undergraduate science degree and then went to graduate school. The graduate program happened to be in a medical school environment, which had a significant impact on my career direction.
